Geology
Course Description
A Level Geology is a scientifically rigorous and highly rewarding course that develops a deep understanding of the processes shaping the Earth. Students study geophysics, resource exploration and environmental monitoring, building strong analytical and problem-solving skills. The course highlights the critical role of geology in the green economy, with a focus on climate change, sustainable resource management and the transition to low-carbon technologies such as the newly opened geothermal powerplant in Cornwall. Students explore the extraction and use of key minerals, such as lithium and rare earth elements, essential for electric car batteries, alongside the environmental challenges associated with mining.
Fieldwork is an integral part of the course, with students completing four mandatory fieldwork days that allow them to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings while developing essential practical and observational skills. Geology is a hands-on course and there is never a dull moment in our laboratory, brimming with minerals, rocks and fossil specimens. A visit to the University of Liverpool’s Geoscience department in the Autumn term provides insight into how advanced apparatus is used by geologists in industry. Palaeontology is also studied, offering an understanding of fossils, evolution and past climate change, and helping students explore how life and environments have responded over geological time. Students can further challenge themselves by competing in the national schools’ geology challenge at the Geological Society in London, applying their knowledge to innovative projects such as asteroid mining. Geology is recognised as a UK skills shortage area, providing clear pathways into further study and a wide range of careers that support a more sustainable future.
