Public Services visit to Bolton Wanderers

Public Services students attended an employer taster day at Bolton Wanderers, to explore the different roles within the emergency services. The day consisted of planning for and responding to emergency incidents, with the opportunity to plan and respond to a hypothetical scenario in the stadium.

The day was in collaboration with our Realising Aspirations flagship programme, designed to prepare students for life after college. The programme gives students the chance to explore their future pathways through seminars and lectures led by top university professors, visits to universities across the country, and experiences linked directly to their areas of interest.

The visit enabled Public Services students to work closely with staff from the emergency services such as paramedics and police officers, look at how to create an emergency plan and understand THRIVE assessment in detail. In addition, students were introduced to a variety of concepts key to support their studies including graded responses, emergency service protocols and scene assessments.

During the day, students looked what an emergency incident is, planned a response to a simulated emergency incident at the football stadium and considered the potential impacts. Alongside staff from the emergency services and Bolton Wanderers, students were given roles as if they were the team on a match day. The event was a great success as using theory learnt in the morning, students identified immediate tasks and came up with an appropriate METHANE message.
