Be Ambitious Week 2025

20 Jun 25

This week, Ashton Sixth Form College students took part in Be Ambitious Week for the third consecutive year, an initiative that continues to grow as a core part of our Careers and Employability offer. First launched in 2023, the programme gives students valuable insight into the world of work, offering hands-on employability experiences and opportunities to develop essential skills. Be Ambitious Week supports students with  building confidence, broadening their aspirations, and standing out as they take their next steps after college.

During the week, sponsored by Stamford Products Ltd, students participated in either a work placement or an employer-led project. A record-breaking number of students took part in Be Ambitious Week this year with over 1100 showing that year on year, more students are benefiting from this valuable opportunity to develop essential skills for their future.

For those students undertaking an employer-led project, the week began with a launch event hosted by our Centre Principal, Lisa Richards, and guest speaker Anne Morris, CEO of Yipiyap. Together, they set a motivational and positive tone for the week ahead, speaking about the importance of lifelong learning and the often unconventional paths that successful careers can take.

The college once again partnered with high-profile companies such as Marks & Spencer, BBC News, and United Utilities, who set real-time briefs and projects for students to work on throughout the week. Students stepped out of their comfort zones, collaborated in teams, and produced industry-standard work, all while being mentored by professionals who provided expert advice and guidance to help them succeed in their projects.

In addition to the employer-led projects, 880 students have successfully secured and completed work placements with external companies. Completing a work placement during Be Ambitious Week allowed students to experience a real-life workplace and gain skills and knowledge in a variety of industries. The college secured work placements for students at lots of high profile organisations, including, Not Really Here Media (Tameside Reporter), the NHS, Transpennine Express and many more.

The standard of work produced throughout the week has been highly praised by employers. Mark Andrews, from Not Really Here Media, worked with students during their work placement,, providing them with valuable experience in journalism. Mark commented: “It’s been a fantastic week with the students, they’ve surpassed expectations with their confidence and eagerness to learn. All four students have been punctual every day and gained valuable experience in interviewing, researching, and producing a podcast, as well as reading news items for Tameside Radio. I’m so pleased with the progress they’ve made! I wish them the very best of luck for the future.”

Hayley Hirst, from Marks & Spencer, was extremely impressed with the students’ work on the employer-led project: “I really enjoyed my time with the students this week, it was great to see how enthusiastic they were about the project. There were some brilliant examples of smart research, creative thinking and they showed a real understanding of our business and our customers. It was a pleasure to spend time with staff and students and I wish everyone the best with their future!”

It’s clear to see the students have enjoyed Be Ambitious Week. Alimah, who completed a work placement at Not Really Here Media commented: "I've really enjoyed my work experience as I have been able to engage with the activities and develop new skills. It has really allowed me to broaden my perspective and given me great insight into my career search."

Rachel Smirke, Assistant Principal of Curriculum and Progression, said: “We are absolutely thrilled with the success of this year’s Be Ambitious programme. The energy, enthusiasm, and commitment from our students, staff, and industry mentors have been nothing short of exceptional. This year marked a record-breaking number of students embarking on work placements, travelling far and wide to gain real-world experience, build valuable skills, and develop their professional confidence. Alongside these placements, a significant number of students participated in employer-led project briefs in collaboration with leading organisations such as Stamford Products, City in the Community, Balfour Beatty, C21 Creative Communications, and Kellanova. We’ve already received outstanding feedback about the professionalism and talent of our students, and we couldn’t be prouder of everything they’ve achieved. We’re looking forward to reconnecting with them next week for a period of reflection and future planning. A huge thank you to everyone who has supported Be Ambitious this year. We can’t wait to work with you again next year!”

A huge well done to all students for fully immersing themselves in the opportunities and experiences throughout Be Ambitious Week! Also thank you to all employers for working with our students. We look forward to another successful Be Ambitious Week in 2026!
