Being An Effective Researcher EPQ Conference
At Ashton Sixth Form College, A2 students have the opportunity to take the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). This additional qualification allows students to explore a topic or area that particularly interests them, developing independent research and project management skills along the way.
For the third year running, EPQ students from Ashton Sixth Form College, along with those from Allerton Grange Sixth Form in Leeds, were invited to the Being an Effective Researcher EPQ Learner Conference. The event offered a fantastic opportunity for students to engage with a wide range of research-related topics.
Throughout the conference, students heard from a range of guest speakers. Professor Kevin Orr from the University of Huddersfield discussed the importance of research, while Emily Sharp from the University of Leeds led a session on AI and academic integrity. Also from Leeds, Professor Abigail Harrison-Moore explored the value of using primary sources in research, and Becky Naylor Teece and Lily Bissell from the University of Southampton shared advice on refining research questions for EPQ projects.
The conference also featured contributions from members of the college’s EPQ Supervisor Team, including Centre Principal Lisa Richards and Assistant Principal (Teaching and Learning) Jo Fletcher-Saxon.
EPQ Co-ordinator, Rachel Allen commented:
"Held annually since 2023, the EPQ Conference was a fantastic collaboration between Ashton Sixth Form College and Allerton Grange Sixth Form in Leeds. The event created a real ‘research buzz’ among our EPQ students, inspired by the insight and enthusiasm of our guest speakers.
The day would not have been possible without the wonderful contributions from Professors Kevin Orr and Abigail Harrison-Moore, colleagues from the University of Leeds and the University of Southampton, as well as ASFC Assistant Principal Jo Fletcher-Saxon and Principal Lisa Richards. Huge thanks go to all our guest speakers, their input continues to inspire our students and will no doubt be reflected in their EPQ journeys."
