If you need advice about university and UCAS Clearing, you can come into college (without an appointment) to speak to a careers advisor on Thursday 18th and Friday 19th August between 8:30am and 3:00pm. A couple of senior tutors will also be available in college. Additionally you can email careers@asfc.ac.uk.

Results Day: University & Clearing – What Happens Next

Hopefully you'll get the grades you need, but if you just miss out, the university might accept you anyway.

  • You might get a place on either your firm or insurance choice, depending on your results.

  • You might be offered an alternative by the university – a 'changed course offer' (which you'll need to accept or decline).

  • You might not get a place, but you can search through the UCAS Clearing service to see what courses still have vacancies.

If no decisions are showing in your UCAS TRACK, give your universities a call to find out more.

Want to go to your insurance choice rather than your firm choice

If you meet the grades for your firm choice, UCAS will automatically place you there and your insurance choice will automatically be declined. However, your insurance choice might still be able to offer you a place through Clearing. Contact your insurance choice to discuss your options. If they have places available, and give permission, you can select ‘I want to apply somewhere else’ on TRACK and will then be able to add a Clearing choice.

Want to change to a different course at the same university

The best thing to do is to give the university a call. If they agree, they will send an updated offer for the new course.

What do you need to know about Clearing?

  • You can start researching Clearing vacancies before results day - make a list of your top 5 in preference order.

  • Universities list Clearing vacancies on their website and often have dedicated Clearing helplines.

  • Degrees with a foundation year may be a good option if your grades are considerably lower than expected.

  • Once you have your results, you can add a Clearing choice into your UCAS application from 3pm on Thursday 18th August. BUT always speak to the university before you add them as a choice into your UCAS TRACK. You can speak to more than one university before adding a Clearing choice into TRACK.

  • When phoning a university have your UCAS ID number, a list of your qualifications and grades, credit and charge on your phone and write down the name of the person you speak to. Be prepared to say why you are interested in the degree.

  • You can only add one Clearing choice at a time into TRACK, if you are unsuccessful you can then add another choice.

Tips for getting through to universities on/around results day

  • Universities will have a team of staff manning incoming calls – often working evenings and at the weekend

  • If you hear the ringing tone, stay with it. It’s likely that you’ll be in a queuing system, and hanging up will mean you’ll need to start the process of waiting again

  • If you pick up an engaged tone, this usually means ‘all lines are busy ‘at the moment you’ve called’. Our advice is to try again immediately, (a free line could appear straight away)

If you do better than expected...

  • Adjustment: If you had a conditional firm offer you met and exceeded, you might be curious about courses with higher entry requirements.
If so, you can see what's available using the UCAS Adjustment service.

If things don't go to plan...

  • Reviews of marking: If you request a priority review of marking it is important to keep in touch with your university to keep them up-to-date & consider your plans if your review is not successful.

  • GAP Year: You could work/volunteer and re-apply through UCAS to start university in Sept 2022.
Paid mentoring in schools YIPIYAP https://yipiyap.co.uk/

  • Apprenticeships: You could search and apply for apprenticeships vacancies but remember this can take time and you will need to be proactive and focussed.
