Ashton XL student and football referee interviewed by the BBC

7 January 2022

Lucy Wilkinson is an XL (high achievers) student at Ashton Sixth Form College.

On GCSE results day, Lucy made headlines of her own, achieving a staggering 10 GCSEs at grade 9. She studied at Rayner Stephens High School, a school that is also part of Stamford Park Trust.

She joined the college in September 2021 and is currently in her first year, studying A Levels in Biology, Chemistry and Maths.

Alongside her dedication to learning, Lucy has been playing football for over 7 years. She is currently playing for the Ashton Pumas U18s team, a team she loves. Around three seasons ago, Lucy decided to begin refereeing. She mostly works with young people learning the game.

Lucy was interviewed by the BBC about the abuse referees have received over the years. She was able to share her unique point of view as a younger female referee, where parents and families make up the sideline spectators.

Speaking to the BBC, Lucy said that she enjoys refereeing because, " "It's such a positive thing for character development," she says. "I have gained so much more confidence. I used to be really shy." " (Nesta McGregor, www.bbc.co.uk/sport)
