Ashton Sixth Form College have secured an incredible partnership with England Rugby Football Union

After a tough selection process and an application for one of just twelve places in the country, Ashton has been selected to take part in the 'Focus College' programme in collaboration with England Rugby.

The aim of the programme is to develop rugby in the further education sector. Ashton Sixth Form College is extremely passionate about growing their sporting offer and providing more opportunities for young people. Partnering with the Rugby Football Union will allow rugby to become much more accessible to 16-19 year olds.

Moving forward, the sport department will work to have a strong focus and increase the participation of young people getting involved in rugby. The college will work closely with Aldwinians RUFC and Ashton-Under-Lyne RFC to help students with the passion to progress from college to club level. In addition, the college will provide opportunities for students to gain coaching qualifications in order for them to work in local clubs and communities within the sport industry.

Training for students will take place at the college campus and at Aldwinians RUFC in Audenshaw, participating in fixtures and competitions throughout the year.

As part of this unique programme, Ashton Sixth Form College will receive funding solely dedicated to helping both male and female students progress within the sport and improve the strength, transition and sustainability of rugby at this level.

Andrew Massey, Sport Co-ordinator at Ashton Sixth Form College said,

We are extremely proud to be working with the RFU. We are looking forward to our next steps and we will work closely with the RFU to deliver a sustainable and inclusive rugby program.
