 Wednesday afternoons - 12pm until 3.00pm

What does this qualification cover?

This qualification prepares learners for further learning and training whilst developing an understanding of the teaching and learning environment in a school setting. It covers areas such as how to support the well-being of a child or young person and child and young person development.

There are three units you will cover which includes: 

  • Understanding schools and organisations
  • Understand how to keep children and young people healthy, safe and well
  • Understand how to communicate with children, young people and adults 

    There will also be some independent learning. 

Who is this course suitable for? 

This qualification is aimed at a range of learners who are thinking of working in a school setting including: young people, mature learners, learners with special educational needs or where English is an additional language.

This short course is ideal for individuals contemplating a career shift but are uncertain about working within a school environment, as well as for those seeking advancement opportunities in the field of education. 


How will you be assessed?

This qualification will be internally assessed using a range of methods, which could include written assignments or tasks such as designing a leaflet or booklet, charts or diagrams, or setting up an information board.

Entry requirements 

  • Learners must be age 19+
  • Learners must have a good standard of verbal and written skills. 

    This is a knowledge-only qualification. Learners do not need to be working or undertaking practical placements to take this qualification.
     

What qualifications can you progress to?

Learners can progress onto the Level 2 Award in Support Work in Schools and Colleges or the Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning. 

Cost

Study for free if you are 19 or older, and live in Greater Manchester if/and: 

  • This is your first Level 1 qualification
  • You are in receipt of Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA), Employment Support Allowance (ESA) or Universal Credit. Universal Credit must be less than £617 a month or £988 a month for a joint claim
  • Or you are aged 24 years old in paid employment but with an annual gross salary of less than £23,104
