Success for OxNet students during 2022 Access Week

20 September 2022

Four Ashton Sixth Form College students have completed various OxNet programmes and have recently participated in Access Week (summer residential) at Pembroke College Oxford.

In recent years, the summer school has hosted virtually; however, this year returned to being an in-person event. Students from the North West, North East and London joined a range of tutorial groups and lectures, allowing them to explore new topics in depth.

Access Week 2022:

Day 1 - After a busy day of travelling, students were welcomed to Pembroke College by Dr Peter Claus and Morgan Lewis. In the evening, students attended a drinks reception and dinner, later followed by Shakespeare on the Quad.

Day 2 - Students began the week with an introduction to essay writing with Librarian, Laura. They had their first tutorial, exploring various essay/assignment questions for each course, also making a start on additional reading. Science participants attended a Q&A panel event with academics - experts in their fields.

Day 3 - Students signed up to at least two option lectures for the week, participated in subject mock interviews with academics and continued their essay preparation. In the evening, undergraduate mentors hosted a quiz night on the quad for groups to win a number of prizes!

Day 4 - From visits to the Ashmolean to working on assignments, Ted Talks to attending more lectures... students had the opportunity to get to know Oxford! Before dinner, each course headed over to Christ Church Meadow to get to know the undergraduate mentors better and ask them questions about being an undergraduate at Oxford!

Day 5 - Essay hand-in day!! All courses worked hard to complete assignments by the deadline and went on tours to explore Oxford with the undergraduate mentors. Throughout the day, students went on various trips and visits with OxNet staff and experienced the Joseph Owen Formal Dinner in the hall.

Day 6 - Everybody attended their final tutorial to discuss assignments with their PhD tutor, all programmes supported Science students' poster presentations and finally certificates/prizes were awarded by Dr Adrian Gregory & Dr Peter Claus.

Huge congratulations to Isabelle (Humanities & Social Sciences), Jacob (Science), Lucy (Science) and Finlay (Philosophy & World Religions) for completing OxNet 2021-22. Jacob was awarded with an Exhibitioner award for Science. Finlay was awarded with an Exhibitioner award for Philosophy & World Religions.
