Alumni talks nuclear fuel and STEM careers

3 May 2017

Alumni Jamie Sutherland-Pownall visited the college to speak to Physics students about the work he does at Sellafield Ltd., a nuclear fuel reprocessing and nuclear decommissioning site.

Jamie studied full-time BTEC Sport at Ashton Sixth Form College around 10 years ago, after completing his high school education at Hyde Community College. He went on to study Biomedical Sciences at Leeds Metropolitan University. Focussing on Health and Safety, Jamie then went on to study an MSc in Occupational Health and Safety at The University of Salford. After gaining a few years experience in the field, Jamie joined Sellafield Ltd. in 2015 as a Safety Assessor. Since starting at the company, Jamie has progressed to Senior Safety Specialist. He is also a Chartered Member of IOSH (Institute of Occupational Safety and Health), the world's biggest professional health and safety membership organisation.

Students had the opportunity to meet Jamie and hear about his diverse career path. They gained invaluable advice on how he has achieved so much by the age of just 26. Jamie spoke about his job role, explaining how being a Senior Safety Specialist is a diverse mix of an office job alongside the diversity of being outdoors on site.

Jamie presented the extensive career choices available across STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), future pathways which could range from physical engineering to chemical processing to Health and Safety.

Ashton Sixth Form College regularly invite Alumni back to the college, along with guest speakers, employers and universities, to talk to students about the careers they could go on to after they complete their A-Level and Vocational programmes. Students were able to ask Jamie questions about his experiences and career, actively engaging and seeing the real connection between their work in college and the impact it can have on their future careers.
