Legal Work Experience for Law Students

30 March 2017

Ashton Sixth Form College has partnered with Addleshaw Goddard, once again, to provide two weeks of outstanding legal experience to those students who want to progress on to a legal career.

Each year many of Ashton Sixth Form College’s students aim to begin a career within the legal profession, with around 50 students progressing on to a law degree. The college’s annual partnership with Addleshaw Goddard is key to strengthening applications to higher education, training and employment. Students gain an insight in to the law profession allowing them to think about the prospect of specialising in a certain aspect of law or whether a legal career is truly the career path for them.

Following a fiercely competitive application process, it has been announced that this year Faizah Rahman, Onahmika Zannath, Millie Cole, Lauren Eccles and Alisha Khan have been awarded a place on the prestigious Legal Access Week ran by multinational Law firm, Addleshaw Goddard.

This work experience week is part of Addleshaw Goddard's social mobility commitment, PRIME (www.primecommitment.org), designed to give young people from less privileged backgrounds fairer access to the legal profession and provides students with a comprehensive programme of work shadowing, court trips, skills sessions and learning exercises.

Previous schemes have proved to be an extremely positive experience for those involved. Students thoroughly enjoyed their time on the programme and appreciated the efforts of those who come into contact with them. Students said:

"I loved it! I have never been so intellectually challenged in my life and I feel that I have really extended my skill set"

"Challenging but I learnt a lot. It helped me get an insight into a future career. Thank you for the experience!"

In addition, students then spend a second week visiting the in-house legal departments at five leading businesses within Manchester City Centre. Previous businesses have included ITV and Manchester United. The opportunities that the Addleshaw Goddard programme offers are outstanding.

Hazel Kindley, Guidance Manager, said:

“Last year, eight of our students were able to benefit from this fantastic opportunity and we are thrilled to continue our partnership with Addleshaw Goddard and once again provide our students with the very best opportunities within their chosen field.”

Barry Matthews (pictured center), Director of Legal Affairs & Third Party Sales, ITV and founder of the LSMP programme said:

“All of us involved in the scheme feel strongly that entry to the legal profession should be meritocratic and without social barriers. Now in its third year, The LSMP encourages students to build their confidence, both through demystifying the world of business and by giving them a wealth of ammunition to populate their CVs and tackle interviews with self-assurance.”
