Sylvia Lancaster and the Sophie Lancaster Foundation

20 June 2013

“Imagine if all the flowers in a garden were the same colour, it would be so boring” said Sylvia Lancaster to staff and students at Ashton Sixth Form College. Sylvia Lancaster visited the college on June 19th as part of the work she does with the Sophie Lancaster Foundation to Stamp out Prejudice, Hatred and Intolerance Everywhere.

Staff and students were deeply moved by the presentation which covers Sylvia’s personal experience of the murder of her Goth daughter Sophie Lancaster in August 2007. The presentation also showed how the charity arose out of Sophie’s death and has gone on to raise awareness of the prejudice faced by people who choose to live alternative lifestyles.

“To me the presentation shows how anybody can make a difference” said student Lauren Carty “That particular hate crime was based on the way Sophie looked but after Sylvia’s hard work she helps the world to see how some minorities are targeted.”

The senseless murder of Sophie Lancaster is something that should never be forgotten and in raising the awareness of young people through presentations and charity, Sylvia Lancaster is doing everything she can to make sure this never happens again to someone else’s daughter.
