ASHTON SIXTH FORM COLLEGE STUDENT COUNCIL
The Student Council are a group of students who are elected by their peers to represent the interests of students at the college and make decisions on a variety of important issues. The Council also organise charity fund-raising events, and college staff will actively seek the opinions of the Council whenever the views of students are required.
Student council elections take place in February and are open to all first-year students. In 2008, the on-line voting system was used for the first time – students embraced the new system, resulting in our highest-ever voting turnout.
The Student Council have a range of responsibilities beyond representing the views of their peers including organising charity events and fundraisers. Council representatives also meet regularly with the College Principal and student liaison officer in order to raise issues and pass on comments from the student body.
Two council members (usually the President and Vice President) become part of the College’s governing body – this gives the Student Council the opportunity to represent the views of the student body and influence college policy and development.
There are lots of great reasons to get involved with the Student Council – if you want to represent your peer, voice their opinions and help shape the future of the college, this is a great opportunity. You’ll also be able to demonstrate a wide range of skills from communication and teamwork to organisational and leadership skills: a great boost for your CV, Job and university applications.
The Student Council was recently involved in the overhaul of the college timetable and put forward suggestions from a student perspective. Preparations for a summer leaver’s ball for 2009 are also underway.
