Ashton Sixth Form College is working with local high schools to provide the new Higher Diploma programme and currently has a number of year 9 and 10 pupils studying on the course. Watch the introduction video at the bottom of the page to find out more about the course.

Today, Tuesday 26 Jan, the students were taught the basics of video editing using Apple’s industry leading Final Cut Pro in the college’s media suite. The students found out how to import video, speed it up, slow it down, add transitions and text while working to the beat of a music track. Students seemed to really enjoy the session and are looking forward to attending an Apple led training event next week in Manchester to further their video editing skills.

Recently the IT Diploma students visited an IT conference, organised by e-skills (the sector skills council for IT) and led by staff from Accenture, a multi-national IT company. 14 students embarked on the journey from Ashton Sixth Form to the conference centre near Manchester University.

Accenture staff gave talks explaining what the company does and how this relates to the IT Diploma before introducing a competition for the students. The high school pupils were given a scenario relating to a failing retail chain, they were asked to identify the problems that the retailers faced and how the problems could be solved using technology. Accenture conducted role plays to give the perspective from different people in the organisation and the students had to identify the problems. They were then split into groups with a teacher and a member of Accenture staff within each.

One of the groups representing their high schools and Ashton Sixth Form College were victorious in the competition. Elliot Forde (Egerton Park), Callum Bowater Egerton Park), Matthew Moody (Mossley Hollins), Charles Dalton (Longdendale) and Paul Doogan (Egerton Park) were the winning group. Accenture staff gave the group high praise for their maturity, presentation skills, the group’s boldness and their ability to think on their feet. Many of the students from other institutions were older than the group, Charles is a Year 9 pupil and the rest of the team are currently in Year 10. The group was awarded prizes including an IT book and a £20 Amazon voucher each.

In addition, Elliot won the prize draw for an iPod Nano and it was agreed by all, that he deserved the prize for his efforts in the competition.

“I am really proud of all our students they worked hard and came up with some great ideas. They were amongst the youngest students attending the conference and I was very impressed at the example they set for others.”
